Large round inkstone
Large round inkstone Ref: AN06500

Heavy and robust Chinese circular stone, as used by professionals in calligraphy and ink painting, allowing you to keep a reserve thanks to the heavy lid, which imitates the lids of cast iron teapots, equipped with two excavations to grip it with the thumb and index finger, it presents a magpie and prunus decoration.

Dimensions 175x 70 mm, 2,500 g.

Unique piece, frequently used condition. NB: an used inkstone is renowned for transmitting the spirit of its users to the new owner.

Very smooth high quality inkstones found in one location near Shexian in Anhui province, typically green to dark green with sometimes flacks of golden dots and some iridescent marbling. Uneasy to find except at antique shops and collectors' homes.

Sheyan PM Ref: AN06001

Nice little inkstone of She (sheyan) showing the typical dark green colour of this origin. This one is speckled with gold inclusions and has a small marbling called "fish brain jelly" on the right, together with a diaper diagonal pattern in the pit. Early XXth century. A unique piece.

Sheyan PM2 Ref: AN06002

Nice little inkstone of She (sheyan) showing the typical dark green colour of this origin. This one is speckled with some elongated gold inclusions and has a large moiré marbling on both sides, together with a subtle diaper diagonal pattern on its back. Early XXth century. A unique piece.

Beautiful inkstone of She (sheyan) with various dark green shades.This one shows some gold inclusions in a vast shimmering iridescence on both sides, together with mysterious dark shapes on the flat and vertical waves on the back side. Early XXe siècle. A unique piece.

Superb inkstone of She (sheyan) with various dark green shades. This large stone shows several gold marblings on front and back with especially a wonderful ensemble where the pit has been decided to be carved. Early XXe siècle. A unique piece.

Large Sheyan
Large Sheyan Ref: AN06010

Classical style with a front pit (tangchi), unusual size and delicate carving of geometrical ginkgo leaves on three top borders. Colour is dark greenish grey, underneath face speckled with small golden stains, typical with sheyan. This stone has been used and is in perfect state, it can't be dated but the weight and the engraving show an origin before XXth century.

Size 128 x 204 x 55 mm, weight 3.360 k. With its brown varnished wooden box: 148 x 224 x 75 mm, 3.995 k. More pictures on request.

Duan inkstones


The very best quality coming from the Guilin area in Guangdong province. Several pits give different kinds: Songkeng (mine of Song) are purple colour, Mazi keng are deep grey to black and preased as the smoothest, some othe mines are closed today as exhausted. Most of the good Duanyan (Duan inkstones) are to be searched at antique shopes nowadays.

Large Duanxiyan
Large Duanxiyan Ref: AN05510


Spectacular Duan inkstone of dark purple shade, extracted from the Songkeng (Song mine). It's a chaoshou style, which means that one can raise it by passing the hand under it. This elevated form with the open front also appeared under the Song, in order to be able to make heavy inkstones. Remarkable decoration of turtles and lotus in the pond and delicate engraving of flowers and clouds on all the upper periphery. Delivered with its pedestal and custom-made cover in black lacquered paulownia wood (some minimal chips in the lacquer, rather fragile), which allow to date this stone before the twentieth century. Apparently she never served and was owned by a collector.

Dimensions bare 200 x 120 x 70 mm, weight 2,665 k (2,910 with base and lid). Other images on request.

Mazikeng, oval
Mazikeng, oval Ref: AN05505


Inkstone of Duan (duanyan), from the ancient mine called Mazikeng, which gives dark grey stones with a delicate purple shade. Its oval shape is carved as a wine jar, the body of which gives the grinding surface while the neck makes the pit, surrounded by the usual cord of wine containers. The flat has an extraordinary smooth touch enhanced by decades of service at long gone calligraphers'. Several wear marks and minor chips demonstrate that past life. A unique piece. Ming dynasty.

Mazikeng, rectangular
Mazikeng, rectangular Ref: AN05506


Inkstone of Duan (duanyan), from the ancient mine called Mazikeng, which gives dark grey stones with a delicate purple shade. Its rectangular shape has a simple frame but is hollowed by a pit in the shape of a stylised cloud above a prunus branch, such evoking a "longyi" scepter. One will notice a diagonal yellowish stroke inside the stone as well as a clearer spot on the left which are quite appreciated in Duanyan. The flat has an extraordinary smooth touch enhanced by decades of service at long gone calligraphers'. Several wear marks and minor chips demonstrate that past life. A unique piece. Ming dynasty.
