Xuan or not Xuan ?

The best paper in the world is still handmade since the VIIth century in Anhui province, after a very special plant called Blue sandal, the fiber of which is so long that the pulp requires no size or starch to be strong. That's the secret of its perfect capacity of absorbing mediums so that they become permanent.
The name comes from the county: Xuanzhi (zhi is paper). It is not surprising that every Chinese workshop calls its products Xuan, but the only genuine is made in a place now belonging to the State and the sheets are stamped for not being exported. Our company nevertheless has friendship relations in the area and therefore can supply limited quantities to demanding European artists.

Washi or not Washi ?

Japan has chosen papermaking as the symbol of all national qualities. Severe selection of raw material, arduous work in uncomfortable conditions and an especially difficult way of forming the sheet are inimitable (and inimited!) Therefore washi or "Japanese paper" is the essential surface for shodo (calligraphy), sumi-e (painting) and ukiyo-e (print). Some kinds are also necessary for deluxe packaging, lampshade creating or paper sculpture (see also "Textured paper").
