Since trade gesso is not suitable for genuine mediaeval illumination, we're making our own after improving Cennino Cennini's ancient recipe (plaster of Paris, white titanium, fish glue, sugar, Armenian bole, etc.) and let it dry slowly. Please note that if good gesso is irreplaceable for raising gold, it also contents a toxic substance and must be used only by well-informed adults and never be left unattented. The quantity is enough for a full page image or several small ones. Before using it, add two drops of distilled water and, the day after, add the same quantity of distalled water then stir with a toothpick to make a cream, as smoothly as possible to avoid creating bubbles

Binder for illumination, home made in our laboratory after lengthy book readings. All components are like in the past: natural. We searched old books to finally formulate our own recipe, where gum arabic comes for a half but the way of using it is the same: a few drops on the powdered genuine pigments are enough. Mix well with the Palette knife on the slab, add one drop of binder if too thick, etc. Other components help perfect the product: glycerine, honey, oxen bile. When we produce a large quantity we sometimes add a little essence of clove
